the girl in the wallpaper

this is one of my favorite illustrations from elizabeth and zenobia, just a creepy little nursery with some toys laying around and a girl staring out from the wallpaper... working in greyscale for the first time forced me to think a lot about contrast and value, and i loved it so much i was hesitant to return to painting in color!

elizabeth and zenobia

the reason for my two-month absence from social media (and the world outside my studio, really): i've been working hard on the cover and interior illustrations for this gloriously spooky new middle grade gothic novel, elizabeth and zenobia by jessica miller. it's chilling! it's mysterious! and it involves some seriously sinister wallpaper. aaand, it was art directed and designed by alyssa nassner, one of my MICA illustration department classmates! i loved working on it and can't wait to share some of the interior illustrations. out on september 19th from abrams books.
